Just got back from an amazing trip to Spain, and I feel like I left a piece of my soul in its food! A lot of friends have been asking me for tips on where and what to eat in Spain, so I decided to write a post about my personal top list of foodie cities. This is purely my own experience, and I welcome everyone to add their suggestions and join the discussion!
First on the list has to be the “World’s Culinary Capital”—San Sebastián. This place is a foodie’s paradise, boasting the highest density of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world! But for me, the real charm lies in the countless Pintxos bars in the Old Town. With exquisite small bites lined up on the counter, paired with a glass of local cider or white wine, you can literally eat your way from one end of the street to the other. After that, I felt like I never wanted to eat anything else again.
If San Sebastián represents fine dining, then Granada is the embodiment of generous hospitality. The most amazing culture here is the “free tapas” tradition—a unique feature of this city with the most amazing food in Spain. You heard that right! In many bars in the old quarter, you order a drink and the bar gives you a tapa for free. Each bar offers something different, and they’ll even give you a new type of tapa with each refill! It’s literally FREE
! You can eat and drink your fill for just a few euros. This is an experience you must try.

Of course, we can’t forget Barcelona, the heart of Catalonia. It’s not just about Gaudí’s architecture; it’s also home to the famous La Boqueria Market. The array of fresh hams, cheeses, fruits, and seafood is dazzling. In addition to traditional Catalan cuisine, the creative tapas scene here is also famous, something you can explore in these recommendations for smaller Spanish foodie towns
. However, when it comes to paella, I personally recommend going to its birthplace, Valencia. You’ll find a wider variety of paella there, as detailed in these recommendations for Spain’s foodie cities, and you can taste the authentic version with chicken, rabbit, and that perfect crispy rice crust at the bottom, known as “socarrat”. The taste is absolutely incredible!
To help you choose, I’ve put together a simple table to summarize. I hope this helps you with your planning:
| City | Signature Dish | Why It’s Recommended |
| San Sebastián | Pintxos | World’s highest density of Michelin stars; alleys are full of amazing little bars. |
| Granada | Tapas | Get a free tapa with your drink; experience the most authentic Andalusian atmosphere. |
| Barcelona | Catalan cuisine, Seafood | La Boqueria Market, creative tapas, a wide variety of seafood. |
| Valencia | Paella | The birthplace of paella; find the most authentic “socarrat”. |
Every city has its own flavor, and this is just my personal preference. What other unforgettable foodie cities in Spain have you visited? Share them in the comments below!
