When you travel to Spain, beyond admiring Gaudí’s architecture and feeling the passion of Flamenco, the one thing you absolutely can’t miss is the food! As a seasoned foodie who has spent quite a few years in Spain, today I’m here to share my personal list of cities that are worth a special trip just for their culinary scenes. They may not be as famous as Madrid or Barcelona, but when it comes to gastronomic charm, they are absolutely top-tier!
First on the list has to be San Sebastián in the Basque Country. It boasts the highest concentration of Michelin stars per capita in the world, but what truly captivates me are the countless Pintxos Bars scattered throughout its Old Town. Pintxos are the Basque version of small snacks, typically more elaborate than the Tapas of the south and often held together with a toothpick. Each bar has its own house specialties, ranging from classic grilled mushrooms and foie gras to innovative molecular gastronomy creations. You can grab a glass of local cider or white wine and hop from one bar to the next—it’s a true foodie paradise! As for dieting… that can wait until tomorrow
!
If you’re on a budget but still want to experience Spain’s ‘tapas culture,’ then Granada in Andalusia is your perfect choice, arguably the city with the best food in Spain
. It’s one of those recommended small foodie cities in Spain that still upholds the tradition of serving a free Tapa with every drink. This means for the price of a beer or a soda, you get a delicious complimentary Tapa, which could be anything from fried fish and potato omelets to mini burgers. Hop between a few bars, and after a couple of drinks, you’ve basically had a full dinner. This generous custom is becoming increasingly rare in other parts of Spain.

Speaking of Spanish cuisine, how can we not mention the national dish, Paella? For the most authentic experience, you must go to its birthplace, Valencia. Please note: the most traditional Valencian paella is made with rabbit and chicken, not seafood
! Of course, you can find plenty of delicious seafood versions in restaurants by the coast. After your meal, a glass of the local specialty, Horchata (a plant-based drink)
, paired with Fartons (long, sweet pastries), will make your culinary journey complete.
To help you choose, here is a simple table that shows the highlights of each city:
| City | Key Cuisine | Special Experience |
| San Sebastián | Pintxos | Michelin restaurant tour, Old Town bar-hopping |
| Granada | Free Tapas | Free tapas with drinks, Alhambra night views |
| Valencia | Paella | Authentic rabbit & chicken paella, Horchata with Fartons |
Spain’s culinary map extends far beyond these places, with treasures like seafood from Galicia, oxtail stew from Seville, and the hearty Asturian bean stew (Fabada)… Due to limited space, I’ll stop here for today, but you can find more reasons to recommend these Spanish foodie cities.
