Hello everyone! As a newcomer to Spain, I’ve recently been reading some books about Spanish history and find it incredibly fascinating. When you talk about history, you can’t avoid its heroes. If you had to nominate the mightiest hero in Spanish history, who would come to mind? Would it be Pelayo, who initiated the Reconquista, or perhaps one of the controversial Conquistadors? For me, however, one name is unavoidable—El Cid.
The Embodiment of Legend: El Cid
El Cid’s real name was Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, and he lived in the 11th century. His title, ‘El Cid,’ actually comes from the Arabic ‘as-Sayyid,’ meaning ‘The Lord’ or ‘The Master,’ an honorific given to him by the Moorish rulers he once served. The Spanish, however, preferred to call him ‘El Campeador,’ which means ‘The Champion.’ Just from these two titles, you can feel his formidable presence. His life was practically a war epic, and it’s said that he was never defeated in battle.
The Warrior God and the Final Charge
El Cid’s most legendary story is undoubtedly that of his final battle. At the time, he had already passed away. To boost morale, his men strapped his body to his beloved warhorse, Babieca, dressed him in his armor, and had him lead the charge, spear in hand, just as he had in life. When the enemy forces saw the ‘warrior god’ El Cid appear once more, they were terrified, their ranks fell into chaos, and the defenders of Valencia achieved a resounding victory. Whether this story is true or not, it perfectly illustrates the godlike status he held in the hearts of his soldiers.

El Cid was also a complex character. He wasn’t the pure national hero fighting ‘for king and country’ that we might imagine. For the sake of his family and honor, he was exiled by the King of Castile and even served the Muslim Taifa of Zaragoza, fighting against the Christian Kingdom of Aragon. This complex history, however, makes him seem all the more real and human. I’ve made a simple comparison here so you can see the differences between him and another great hero, Pelayo:
| Hero | Main Era | Key Achievements | Symbolic Meaning |
| El Cid | Mid-to-late 11th century | Exceptional military prowess, conquest of Valencia | Individual heroism, chivalric spirit, military genius |
| Pelayo | Early 8th century | Founded the Kingdom of Asturias, initiated the Reconquista | The start of national resistance, founder of the Christian kingdom |
El Cid was more of a peerless warrior who carved out his own destiny in a chaotic era through sheer personal ability; his story is filled with legendary flair and personal charisma. Heroes like Pelayo, on the other hand, tend to carry more historical significance on a national and ethnic level, much like other famous heroes in Spanish history. So, here’s the question: who do you think is the greatest hero in Spanish history? Is it the invincible El Cid, or the foundational Pelayo? Or do you have someone else in mind?
