I just completed my student visa renewal in Spain and want to share the entire process experience with everyone. As an international student studying in Madrid, this renewal gave me a deeper understanding of Spain’s bureaucratic procedures.
Pre-renewal Preparation
First, it’s important to understand that student visa renewal must begin within 60 days before your current visa expires. Never wait until the last minute to start preparing, as appointment waiting times can be quite long, and you might face issues like student visa rejection. I recommend starting to collect all necessary documents 3 months in advance.

Basic required documents include original passport and copies, current residence card copy, school enrollment certificate, financial proof, etc. It’s particularly important to note that all non-Spanish documents must be officially translated and certified.
Detailed Application Process
The renewal process mainly consists of three stages: online appointment booking, document submission, and waiting for results. First, you need to make an online appointment through the immigration office’s official website, selecting the nearest office. After successful booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email that must be printed and brought to the appointment.
| Application Stage | Required Time | Important Notes |
| Online Appointment | 1-30 days | Popular time slots require waiting |
| Document Preparation | 15-30 days | Ensure all documents are complete |
| Review Waiting | 30-90 days | Progress can be checked online |
On appointment day, make sure to arrive 30 minutes early at the office. Staff will check the completeness of all materials, and if there are any missing items or errors in your TIE appointment processing, you’ll need to reschedule. I’ve seen many students have to start over due to small mistakes.
Financial Proof Requirements
This is the most error-prone part of the renewal process. According to current regulations, you need to prove a monthly income source of at least 564.9 euros. This can be satisfied through bank statements, scholarship certificates, or parental financial guarantee.
Bank statements must show the last 3 months of records, and account balance cannot fall below the required minimum amount. If using parental guarantee, you also need to provide proof of relationship and parents’ income certificates.
Practical Advice and Important Notes
From my experience, the most important things are maintaining patience and attention to detail. Spain’s administrative efficiency is indeed not high, but as long as documents are complete, the approval rate for student visa materials is still very high. I recommend not scheduling any international travel during the waiting period, as re-entry becomes problematic once your residence card expires.
Don’t trust agencies claiming they can expedite processing - the official process is fixed with no so-called fast track. The best approach is to strictly prepare materials according to requirements and submit applications on time.
I hope my experience can help friends who are preparing for renewal. If you have specific questions, feel free to discuss in the comments section.
