Recently wanted to prepare some red wine for a friend’s gathering and discovered that Spanish red wine prices are truly budget-friendly. As the world’s third-largest wine producer, the selection of local red wines here is overwhelming, and the prices are surprisingly affordable.
Supermarket Wine Price Ranges
From my purchasing experience, the cheapest red wines can go as low as 1-2 euros per bottle, which are usually supermarket private labels. Mercadona’s Comenge series costs around 1.5 euros, while Carrefour’s Tierra Savia is about 2 euros. Although inexpensive, the taste is still acceptable, particularly suitable for daily table wine or large gatherings.

Slightly better supermarket red wines range from 3-8 euros, offering much richer selection in this price bracket. El Corte Inglés frequently has promotional campaigns where wines originally priced at 10 euros can drop to 5-6 euros on sale. I personally recommend Lidl’s Vega Medien series, around 4 euros per bottle with excellent value for money.
Price Comparison Across Different Regions
| Region | Price Range | Recommended Brands |
| La Rioja | 3-15 | Campo Viejo, Marqués de Cáceres |
| Ribera del Duero | 5-20 | Protos, Pesquera |
| Valencia | 1-8 | Vicente Gandia, Enrique Mendoza |
| Andalusia | 2-12 | Barbadillo, González Byass |
Red wines from Valencia and Andalusia are generally cheaper, mainly because these regions have high production volumes and aren’t as renowned as La Rioja. But honestly, some cheap Valencia red wines taste just as good as expensive ones.
Purchase Tips and Money-Saving Tricks
I recommend following promotional activities at major supermarkets, especially on Wednesdays and Thursdays when many chain stores have special wine prices. Additionally, year-end holiday promotions are abundant, making it worthwhile to stock up on affordable red wines.
Never be fooled by packaging - some bottles that look premium contain quite ordinary wine. I’ve found the most practical approach is checking alcohol content and regional labels; generally, dry reds with 12-14% alcohol have well-balanced flavors. If you’re exploring Spanish wine classification levels and your budget is really tight, 1-3 euro red wines can completely satisfy daily needs and pair perfectly with simple dinners.
