I recently completed a trip from Madrid to Barcelona and wanted to share my hotel accommodation experience along the route. There are actually quite a few good places to stop along this route - you don’t necessarily have to rush to Barcelona in one day.
Direct Journey or Stopover
If you take the AVE high-speed train direct from Madrid hotels, it takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, which is indeed very convenient. However, this time I chose to stay overnight in Zaragoza after checking out from Madrid NH Hotel, and the pace felt much more comfortable. Zaragoza is about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Madrid, and just over an hour to Barcelona - perfectly positioned in the middle.

In Zaragoza, I stayed at a three-star hotel in the city center, priced around 60 euros per night, considerably cheaper than similar hotels in Madrid and Barcelona. The hotel was a 10-minute walk from the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, and I could stroll around the old town in the evening and enjoyed an authentic Aragonese rice dish.
Hotel Price Comparison
I compared hotel prices across the three cities for your reference:
| City | Average 3-Star Hotel | Average 4-Star Hotel |
| Madrid | 80-120 euros | 150-200 euros |
| Zaragoza | 50-80 euros | 100-130 euros |
| Barcelona | 90-140 euros | 180-250 euros |
As you can see from the table, Zaragoza offers excellent value for accommodation. If you’re on a budget, consider spending an extra day in a midway city - it saves money and lets you explore more scenery, including checking out Madrid hotel rankings.
Booking Tips
I usually book two weeks in advance on Booking.com, where you can find plenty of free cancellation options. During peak season, I recommend booking at least a month ahead, especially for Barcelona, where hotels near Sagrada Familia or La Rambla often sell out. Also, while hotels near train stations are convenient, they might be a bit noisy at night pay attention to soundproofing issues.
There are plenty of accommodation options along the Madrid to Barcelona route, so you can arrange flexibly based on your time and budget. If you’re not in a hurry, I highly recommend stopping overnight in Zaragoza or Lleida - you’ll discover many pleasant surprises.
