I’ve been traveling frequently between Madrid and Nice for work recently, so I’ve become quite familiar with this route. Today I’m organizing my booking experience, hoping it will help those planning to visit southern France.

There are quite a few direct flight options from Madrid to Nice, mainly operated by the following airlines. Here’s a simple comparison based on my flying experience:

Price-wise, budget airlines are indeed much cheaper, but pay attention to baggage fees. If you’re bringing large luggage, after adding checked baggage fees, Madrid flight tickets might end up costing about the same as Madrid flight booking guide traditional carriers.
Booking Timing Matters
From my observation, booking 6-8 weeks in advance usually gets you reasonable prices. Prices double during summer peak season and Christmas/New Year, so try to avoid these periods. Tuesday and Wednesday flights are generally 20-30 euros cheaper than weekends.
If your schedule is flexible for Madrid area trips, you can set price alerts on Skyscanner or Google Flights. Last time I received a price drop notification and booked immediately, spending only 110 euros for a round trip.
About Baggage and Boarding
Budget airlines have strict baggage policies - both Vueling and easyJet only allow one carry-on item. If you need checked baggage, buying online in advance is half the price of paying at the airport. Don’t ask me how I know - the lesson of being charged 50 euros for checked baggage at the airport was too painful.
Recommend arriving at the airport at least 90 minutes early. Madrid’s T4 terminal is quite large, and security lines can get very long. Nice airport is relatively smaller, but it also gets crowded during summer tourist season.
Other Practical Tips
Worth mentioning, there are multiple transportation options from Nice airport to the city center. Airport buses 98/99 to downtown take about 30 minutes and cost 6 euros, much more economical than taxis. If you’re staying in the old town, consider taking the tramway - although it requires a transfer, it’s cheaper.
Nice Côte d’Azur Airport has free WiFi, so you can check local weather and attractions while waiting. Airport duty-free prices aren’t better than in the city, so I don’t recommend buying souvenirs there.
The Madrid to Nice route is quite convenient. Plan your trip in advance, choose the right booking time, and you can save plenty of money to enjoy the beauty of the French Riviera.
