Recently, many friends who just arrived in Madrid have been asking me what to wear now, so I have some free time today to share my late October clothing experience here. Honestly, autumn in Madrid is quite special - the temperature difference between morning and evening can make you question reality.
Current Weather Conditions
These days, Madrid’s temperature fluctuates between 12-22 degrees Celsius. It might not sound too cold, but the issue is that morning and noon feel like two completely different seasons. When you leave home around 8 AM, the temperature at Madrid clothing stores might be just over 10 degrees, and the cold wind feels like it cuts right through you. But by 1 or 2 PM, the sun is so strong you want to take off your jacket. That’s why Madrid clothing stores recommend layered dressing is especially important this season.
Basic Weekday Outfit
My current standard setup is: a long-sleeve T-shirt or thin sweater underneath, with a light jacket or cardigan on top. For pants, jeans or casual trousers work well - shorts are basically packed away. For shoes, sneakers or ankle boots are perfect, while sandals are no longer suitable, especially in the morning and evening.

The table below summarizes dressing recommendations for different times of day:
| Time Period | Temperature Range | Recommended Outfit | Notes |
| Morning 7-9 AM | 10-14°C | Light down jacket or thick coat | Scarf recommended |
| Noon 12-3 PM | 18-22°C | Long-sleeve shirt + light jacket | Can remove jacket |
| Evening 7-10 PM | 13-16°C | Sweater + jacket | Quite windy |
Weekend Outdoor Activity Gear
If you’re planning to visit Retiro Park or stroll around the city center on the weekend, such as when traveling from Madrid to Barcelona by train and losing items, I recommend bringing an extra jacket you can easily put on or take off in your bag. Indoor heating has already started here, so you’ll feel warm in shopping centers or restaurants, but you’ll immediately need to add layers once you step outside. Last week when I went to Casa de Campo, I didn’t bring enough clothes and was shivering by 5 PM.
Also, a reminder: Madrid occasionally gets rain this season. Although it’s not frequent, carrying a folding umbrella is always a wise choice. Last Wednesday there was a sudden shower that caught many people off guard.
Some Practical Tips
Hats and scarves can be prepared now, especially for friends who bike or ride motorcycles - the morning wind can sting your face. Gloves aren’t quite necessary yet, but you might need them in another two weeks. By the way, sunscreen can be put away for now, though the midday sun is still fairly strong, it’s not as intense as summer anymore.
Madrid right now is all about layered dressing being most important - better to bring an extra piece than to freeze. Hope these suggestions help newcomers, and feel free to share your own clothing tips!
