Madrid Passport Processing Experience Sharing
I recently completed my passport renewal in Madrid, and the entire process went more smoothly than expected. I’d like to share my experience with those who need it. My old passport was expiring in six months, and although it was still valid, I decided to renew it early considering potential travel plans.
Appointment System Guide
Passport processing now requires booking through the online appointment system of the Chinese Embassy in Spain—walk-ins are not accepted. The appointment URL can be found on the embassy’s official website. I recommend booking at least 2-3 weeks in advance, as slots get filled quickly. I had to check for several days before securing a suitable time slot. Pro tip: The system releases new appointment slots at 8 AM and 2 PM daily—these are the best times to book.

Required Documents Checklist
Be meticulous when preparing documents—missing even one item means rebooking. Based on my experience, here are the essential documents:
| Document | Specific Requirements | Notes |
| Original old passport | Must bring | Even if expired |
| Residence card | NIE original and photocopy | Copy both sides |
| Passport photos | 2 color photos with white background | Size 33mm×48mm |
| Application form | Fill on-site or download in advance | Requires personal signature |
| Fee | Approximately €30 | Cash only |
Important Note: Photos must meet specifications—I witnessed people being asked to reschedule due to non-compliant photos. I recommend visiting a professional photo studio and informing them it’s for a Chinese passport; they’ll know what to do.
Processing Day Procedure
Arrive at the embassy 15 minutes early on your appointment day. The address is Calle de Arturo Soria 113. Security screening is required upon entry, so don’t bring too many items. The entire process takes about 30 minutes, during which staff will verify documents, collect fingerprints, and confirm information. Interviews were required before, but the process has been significantly streamlined.
Collection and Mailing Options
New passport production typically takes 15-20 business days. You can choose self-collection or home delivery. I opted for Madrid passport mailing since I live far away—the shipping fee was €12 via registered mail, which is very secure. If choosing self-collection, you’ll need to book another appointment for pickup, and remember to bring your old passport and collection receipt.
Processing a passport does require some patience, but as long as documents are complete, the process is quite straightforward. I hope this sharing helps everyone. Feel free to discuss and exchange information in the comments if you have other questions.
