Best Beaches Near Madrid Worth Visiting
Living in Madrid, an inland city, makes me miss the seaside especially during summer. Although Madrid itself isn’t coastal, fortunately there are several quality beaches nearby to choose from. Today I’ll share some places I’ve visited over the years, hoping to help those looking to relax by the sea on weekends.
Valencia - The Classic Choice
From Madrid to Valencia takes only about 1 hour and 40 minutes by AVE high-speed train, making it my most frequent destination alongside Real Madrid matches. Malvarrosa Beach is very spacious with fine sand and reasonably clean water. There are many restaurants nearby where you can enjoy authentic paella. I recommend avoiding the peak season in July-August; visiting in June or September means fewer crowds and still pleasant weather. Valencia’s old town is also worth exploring, and the City of Arts and Sciences is great for families with children.

Alicante - The Value Option
Alicante is slightly farther from Madrid, requiring 2 hours and 15 minutes by high-speed train, but the beach quality here is truly excellent. Postiguet Beach is right in the city center, making transportation very convenient. Compared to Valencia, accommodation and dining prices here are more affordable. Santa Barbara Castle offers panoramic views of the entire coastline, and watching the sunset from there in the evening is particularly beautiful.
Transportation and Cost Comparison
| Destination | Train Time | Round-trip Fare | Beach Quality | Suitable For |
| Valencia | 1h40min | 60-90 EUR | ★★★★☆ | Families/Couples |
| Alicante | 2h15min | 70-100 EUR | ★★★★★ | Budget Travelers |
| Murcia | 2h30min | 50-80 EUR | ★★★☆☆ | Off-the-beaten-path Seekers |
Practical Tips
Booking tickets in advance on the Renfe website can get you cheaper fares; sometimes booking two weeks ahead can save 30-40%. Weekend packages departing Friday afternoon and returning Sunday evening usually offer discounts. Hotels near the beach should be booked at least a month in advance, especially during summer. Driving is not recommended because city parking is both troublesome and expensive, while the high-speed train is much more convenient.
My Recommended Itinerary
If you only have one weekend, I most recommend Valencia, especially if you’re following Real Madrid. Take the first AVE on Saturday morning, arrive at noon and head to the beach first, explore the old town in the evening, and enjoy paella for dinner. Sunday morning you can visit the City of Arts and Sciences or continue relaxing at the beach, then take the train back to Madrid in the afternoon. This schedule isn’t too rushed and allows you to fully enjoy your seaside time. Remember to bring sunscreen and sunglasses - the Mediterranean sun is no joke!
