Málaga Hotel Experience Guide
Last summer I spent two weeks in Málaga, staying at three different types of hotels, which gave me a comprehensive understanding of accommodation in this coastal city. You can find detailed insights about Málaga hotel apartments for reference. As the gateway city to the Costa del Sol, Málaga offers incredibly diverse hotel options, from luxury sea-view rooms to budget hostels. Today I’d like to share my accommodation experiences, hoping to provide some useful references for those planning to visit Málaga.
Beachfront Resort Hotels
The first hotel I stayed at was a four-star property near Malagueta Beach, costing around 120 euros per night. The advantages were obvious: the beach was right outside, I could watch the sunrise from the balcony in the morning, and surrounding restaurants and supermarkets were very convenient. The hotel facilities were also good, with a pool and gym. However, the downside was the distance from the old town - although it’s only a 20-minute walk, coming back after sightseeing every day was a bit tiring.

Old Town Boutique Hotels
Later I moved to a boutique hotel in the center of the old town, converted from an old building with authentic Andalusian style. The price was slightly cheaper, around 90 euros per night. The location was absolutely unbeatable, just steps away from major attractions like the Cathedral and Picasso Museum, with tapas bars everywhere in the alleyways. The only issue was that the room was relatively small, and the old town gets quite noisy at night, especially on weekends when bars downstairs stay open until dawn.
Here’s a comparison of the basic information for several hotels I evaluated:
| Hotel Type | Price Range | Main Advantages | Main Disadvantages |
| Beachfront Resort Hotels | 100-200 euros/night | Sea views, complete facilities | Far from attractions |
| Old Town Boutique Hotels | 80-150 euros/night | Convenient location, cultural atmosphere | Smaller rooms, possible noise at Vincci hotels |
| Budget Chain Hotels | 50-80 euros/night | Good value, standardized | Lack of character |
| Apartment Rentals | 60-120 euros/night | Spacious, with kitchen | Less service |
Value for Money Choice
For the last few days, I chose a budget chain hotel located slightly north of the city center, near El Corte Inglés department store. The room rate was only 65 euros per night. Although the decor was quite simple, it had everything needed, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the breakfast at Málaga Picasso Hotel was and the breakfast was actually quite substantial. This option suits friends with limited budgets who still want comfortable accommodation. The only thing is that the surrounding area is quite commercial, lacking a bit of that vacation feeling.
Booking Recommendations
Based on my experience, if it’s your first time in Málaga, I recommend staying in at least two different areas to experience both. The beachfront area is great for relaxation and vacation, while the old town is better for in-depth exploration. During peak season, definitely book in advance - prices can be about 30% cheaper. Also, many hotels don’t include breakfast, but Málaga’s streets are full of cafés where a tostada with coffee costs only 3-4 euros, and eating out is actually more interesting.
Málaga’s hotels are generally of good quality, and you can find satisfactory accommodation in any area. I suggest everyone choose based on their itinerary and budget - there’s no absolute best choice, what suits you is the best. Feel free to leave comments if you have questions!
