Málaga Hotel Experience Guide
Last summer I spent two weeks in Málaga, switching between three different types of hotels, which gave me a comprehensive understanding of accommodation in this coastal city. You can find detailed insights about Málaga hotel apartments for more options. As the gateway city to the Costa del Sol, Málaga offers incredibly diverse hotel choices, from luxury sea-view rooms to budget hostels. Today I want to share my accommodation experiences, hoping to provide some useful references for those planning to visit Málaga.
Beachfront Resort Hotels
The first hotel I stayed at was a four-star property near Malagueta Beach, priced at around 120 euros per night. The advantages were obvious: the beach was right outside, I could watch the sunrise from the balcony in the morning, and there were plenty of restaurants and supermarkets nearby. The hotel facilities were excellent, with a pool and gym. However, the downside was the distance from the old town - although it was only a 20-minute walk, it did get tiring coming back after a full day of sightseeing.

Old Town Boutique Hotels
Later I moved to a boutique hotel in the heart of the old town, housed in a renovated historic building with authentic Andalusian style. The price was slightly cheaper at around 90 euros per night. The location was absolutely unbeatable - just steps away from major attractions like the Cathedral and Picasso Museum, with tapas bars everywhere in the surrounding alleys. The only issues were the relatively small rooms and the noise at night, especially on weekends when the bars downstairs stayed open until dawn.
Here’s a comparison of the hotels I evaluated:
| Hotel Type | Price Range | Main Advantages | Main Disadvantages |
| Beachfront Resort | 100-200 euros/night | Sea views, complete facilities | Far from attractions |
| Old Town Boutique Hotel | 80-150 euros/night | Convenient location, cultural atmosphere | Smaller rooms, potential noise at Vincci Hotel |
| Budget Chain Hotel | 50-80 euros/night | Good value, standardized | Lacks character |
| Apartment Rental | 60-120 euros/night | Spacious, has kitchen | Limited services |
Best Value Option
For the last few days I chose a budget chain hotel located slightly north of the city center, near El Corte Inglés department store. At only 65 euros per night, while the décor was simple, it had everything needed, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Málaga Picasso Hotel breakfast was quite generous. This option suits travelers on a budget who still want comfortable accommodation, though the surrounding area was quite commercial and lacked that vacation atmosphere.
Booking Recommendations
Based on my experience, if it’s your first time in Málaga, I recommend staying in at least two different areas to get the full experience. The beachfront area is perfect for relaxation and vacation vibes, while the old town is better for in-depth exploration. During peak season, definitely book in advance - you can save around 30% on prices. Also, many hotels don’t include breakfast, but there are cafés everywhere in Málaga where a tostada with coffee costs only 3-4 euros, and eating out is actually more interesting.
The overall quality of hotels in Málaga is quite good, and you can find satisfactory accommodation in any area. I suggest choosing based on your itinerary and budget - there’s no absolute best choice, what suits you is what’s best. Feel free to leave comments with any questions!
