Bus is the Most Hassle-Free Choice
I personally recommend taking the bus. ALSA operates direct routes, so no transfers needed - very convenient. There are several departures daily, from around 7 AM until evening. The buses have air conditioning and WiFi, with spacious seating. Booking tickets in advance on their website usually saves 5-10 EUR, while last-minute purchases can be more expensive.
Travel time typically ranges from 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes, with rest stops in Baza or Guadix along the way. Last time I took the 8:30 AM departure and arrived in Granada around 1 PM - perfect timing.
Train Not Recommended
Trains are more complicated since there’s no direct route. You typically need to transfer in Madrid or another city, bringing total travel time to 5-7 hours, and Alicante Granada prices aren’t cheap either. Unless you’re planning to visit Madrid anyway, the bus is definitely better.
While Renfe’s high-speed trains are fast, once you factor in transfer waiting times, the advantage disappears. If you’re in a hurry or on a tight budget, skip the train option.
Self-Driving Experience
If you can drive and want to explore along the way for Alicante Granada transportation, self-driving is a great choice. Take the A-92 highway - the scenery is beautiful, especially as you approach Granada with views of the Sierra Nevada. The total distance is about 320 kilometers, taking 3.5 to 4 hours to drive.
Important considerations: Highway tolls are around 10 EUR, and fuel costs about 30-40 EUR at current prices. If you’re splitting costs among two or three people, it’s actually cheaper than the bus. Also note that parking in Granada’s old town is challenging - check if your hotel has parking in advance.
Other Suggestions
There are also rideshare platforms like BlaBlaCar, which are quite affordable at 15-25 EUR. However, availability depends on luck - suitable rides aren’t guaranteed daily. Friends who’ve tried it said the experience was decent, though timing can be unpredictable.
Take the bus if you’re not rushed, drive if you want flexibility, or try ridesharing if you’re on a tight budget. Granada is truly worth visiting - the Alhambra and Albaicín district are amazing. Have a great trip!
