Last month I visited Valencia and spent an entire day exploring the City of Arts and Sciences, and I was truly amazed. This architectural complex is located southeast of the old town, stretching along the former Turia riverbed park, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava with a very futuristic style.

The City of Arts and Sciences consists of several venues, with the Oceanogràfic aquarium and Science Museum being the most worthwhile. The Oceanogràfic is Europe’s largest aquarium, divided into different marine ecosystems from the Mediterranean to the Arctic, with the penguin area and shark tunnel being particularly popular. The Science Museum features many interactive exhibitions, perfect for families with children, though adults will enjoy it just as much.
Tickets and Opening Hours
For tickets, you can purchase individual venue entries or buy combined tickets for better value. I got the Oceanogràfic + Science Museum combo ticket for around 30+ euros. I recommend booking tickets online in advance, as the queues on-site can be really long. Opening hours vary by venue, typically from 10 AM to 6 PM or 8 PM, with extended hours during summer.
| Venue Name | Adult Ticket Price | Recommended Visit Duration |
| Oceanogràfic | Approx. 32 euros | 2-3 hours |
| Science Museum | Approx. 8 euros | 2 hours |
| Hemisfèric Planetarium | Approx. 8 euros | 1 hour |
| Combined Ticket | Approx. 35-40 euros | Full day |
Besides the indoor venues at the Valencia City of Arts and Sciences, the exterior architecture itself is perfect for photography. The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía with its white shell-like structure is particularly photogenic, with many people capturing reflections by the water pools. There’s also the eye-shaped Hemisfèric planetarium, which screens IMAX films and astronomy documentaries - although most are in Spanish, the visual effects are spectacular.
Practical Tips
Finally, here are some useful tips: the City of Arts and Sciences covers a large area, so comfortable shoes are essential; if visiting in summer, bring sunscreen and water as many areas are open-air; if time is limited, prioritize the Oceanogràfic and Science Museum; there are a few restaurants nearby but they’re pricey, so consider bringing snacks. Overall, whether you’re an architecture enthusiast or a casual tourist, this place, including the City of Arts and Sciences boating experience, is worth spending half a day to a full day exploring thoroughly.
