In my first few years in Spain, my home medicine cabinet was basically stocked with ‘miracle’ remedies I brought from back home. But in recent years, I’ve noticed that local Spanish medical supplies have become much better and more diverse. Does anyone else feel the same? Especially after the pandemic, it seems like the entire healthcare system’s development has hit the fast-forward button. Today, I want to talk about some new trends I’ve observed.
The ‘Professionalization’ of Home First Aid and Personal Protection
Previously, when we talked about home first-aid kits, we might have just thought of band-aids and disinfectant. But if you visit a pharmacy now, you’ll find the categories are incredibly specialized. For instance, there are first-aid kits specifically for hiking and sports injuries, as well as sets containing emergency allergy medication. Moreover, items like high-quality FFP2 masks and at-home rapid antigen test kits have become standard household staples—something unimaginable just a few years ago. When it comes to Spanish medical supplies, what new items have you all stocked in your medicine cabinets recently?

The Rise of Online Pharmacies and Telemedicine
Another very noticeable change is the way we buy medicine and see a doctor. Many pharmacy chains now have their own apps and websites for direct online ordering, with some even providing same-day delivery—a godsend for working professionals or people with limited mobility. While prescription drugs are still tightly controlled (a long-standing aspect of the history of Spanish healthcare), buying non-prescription drugs and health supplements online has become incredibly convenient. Additionally, telemedicine has taken off. While it can’t fully replace in-person visits, it’s great for routine check-ups and consultations about certain Spanish medical supplies, as communicating with a doctor via video saves the time and hassle of a hospital trip. I tried an online dermatology consultation once, and the experience was quite positive.
Online vs. In-Store Pharmacy Comparison
| Channel | Pros | Cons |
| Online Pharmacy | Convenient and fast, saves time, wide selection | Cannot get items immediately, restrictions on prescription drugs |
| Physical Pharmacy | Immediate availability, professional advice from a pharmacist | Limited by opening hours, may have to queue |
Digital Upgrades in the Public Health System
Finally, I want to mention the digitalization of the public health system. Nowadays, booking an appointment with your family doctor is mostly done through a mobile app or website, which is very convenient. You can also view your electronic health records, test results, and medication history within the app. Although the system can be a bit laggy at times, overall, the transparency and efficiency have improved significantly. I feel that Spain is striving to build a smarter and more accessible healthcare service system. These changes genuinely affect everyone living in Spain, and I hope things continue to get even better in the future! What are your thoughts on these changes, or do you have anything to add?
