Hi everyone,
I was chatting with a friend recently, and we happened to touch upon the topic of medical supplies in Spain. I still vividly remember the early days of the pandemic when everyone was scrambling desperately for just a few masks. Now, a few years later, it feels like the supply of medical products on the market is much more stable, and prices have leveled out. So, I thought I’d start a thread to discuss the development of Spanish medical supplies over the past few years. This is all based on my personal observations and some research, and I welcome everyone to join the discussion and add your insights.
From “Mask Scarcity” to “Made in Spain”
In the early days of the pandemic, Spain, like many other European countries, was heavily reliant on imported personal protective equipment (PPE), especially face masks. Back then, almost everything we could buy was imported from Asia. Not only were they expensive, but the quality was also inconsistent. However, this crisis spurred Spain’s domestic manufacturing sector. Many companies, even those in unrelated industries, began to retool or invest in new production lines. If you visit a pharmacy or supermarket now, you’ll find plenty of masks and disinfectant products labeled “Hecho en España” (Made in Spain), something that was hard to imagine before. This didn’t just solve an urgent problem; more importantly, it has enhanced Spain’s self-sufficiency in the face of public health crises.

Opportunities and Challenges in High-End Medical Equipment
Beyond basic protective gear, Spain has always had a solid foundation in the high-end medical equipment sector, such as in diagnostic imaging and surgical instruments. Post-pandemic, both the EU and the Spanish government have increased investment in the healthcare industry, particularly in critical areas like ventilators and in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) devices. I’ve seen news that some Spanish tech companies and research centers are developing smarter and more precise medical equipment. Of course, it’s not all smooth sailing. Compared to traditional powerhouses like Germany and Switzerland, Spain still has a gap to close in terms of core technology and supply chain integrity. Here’s a comparison of the production status of common medical supplies in Spain that I’ve compiled:
| Medical Supply Category | Domestic Production Capacity | Reliance on Imports |
| Masks/Protective Gowns | Significantly Increased | Medium-Low |
| Disinfectants/Hand Sanitizers | High | Low |
| Ventilators/Monitors | Foundational, Growing | Medium |
| High-End Diagnostic Reagents | Developing | High |
| Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) | Low | Very High |
The medical supply situation in Spain has certainly improved significantly in recent years. At the very least, it gives us, as ordinary residents, a greater sense of security when facing sudden public health emergencies. For those of us living in Spain, being able to easily buy affordable and compliant medical products is the most direct benefit, especially concerning Spanish healthcare. I’m curious to know what everyone else thinks or if you have any information, perhaps about the history of Spanish medicine? For instance, have you discovered any good local Spanish brands?
