Since moving to Spain, I’ve always used traditional banks, but I kept hearing friends talk about the ‘Pony Bank,’ also known as EVO Banco. The perks sounded incredible—no annual fees, free global cash withdrawals, and more. I was tempted for a long time and finally decided to open an account last month. So today, I’m sharing my first-hand experience to help anyone who might be considering it.
# Account Opening Process
The entire opening process was much simpler than I expected, and it was all done online. I just had to fill out my information on their website, upload my NIE and some basic documents, and then verify my identity through a video call with customer service. The customer service representative was quite friendly. Although she spoke a bit fast, I could understand most of it by listening carefully. A little over a week later, I received the physical card in the mail. The design is quite minimalist and looks good.

# App and Daily Use
As a digital-first bank, EVO’s app is really well-designed. The interface is clean, and the features are intuitive. All the common operations, like transfers, checking your bills, and even getting an EVO Banco bank statement, are very smooth. What I like most is its expense categorization feature. It clearly shows how much I’ve spent on food, transportation, and shopping each month, which is a great help for budgeting. However, logging in sometimes requires two-factor authentication, which can be a bit cumbersome, but it’s understandable for security reasons.
# Card Payment and Withdrawal Experience
The nickname ‘Swipe the Pony’ really holds up. After getting the card, I made a point to try it out in various places. From large stores like El Corte Inglés and Mercadona to the small frutería downstairs, it worked flawlessly everywhere card payments were accepted. As for cash withdrawals, which is what many people are curious about, I specifically tried it at a CaixaBank ATM, and sure enough, I wasn’t charged any fees. That’s a huge plus! Here are a few key points I’ve summarized:
| Category | My Experience |
| Application Ease | High - Fully online, no need to visit a branch |
| App Usability | High - Modern interface, full-featured |
| Card Compatibility | High - Accepted at all major merchants |
| ATM Withdrawal | Excellent - Fee-free at partner network ATMs |
| Customer Service | Average - Only in Spanish, requires some language proficiency |
EVO Banco is an excellent choice as a card for daily spending or as a backup, especially for those of us who want to avoid typical maintenance fees. Its ‘Cuenta Inteligente’ (Smart Account) automatically sweeps any balance over €4,000 from your current account into a savings account that earns interest, which is a nice little perk. Of course, if you deal with large transactions or need more complex financial services, you might still want a traditional bank as your main account. Still, having an EVO Banco bank statement is very useful, and some even use EVO Banco for Spanish visa applications. What are your experiences with it?
