Hi everyone, I just moved to Spain a few months ago and opened an account with Santander. Back in my home country, I was used to handling everything with mobile banking apps—transfers, checking my balance, buying investment products—and I rarely had to go to a physical branch. I’m wondering, is mobile banking common here in Spain? How are the apps from the major banks?

I downloaded the Santander app and it seems a bit complex at first glance. There are a lot of features, and I’m a bit hesitant to just start clicking around. I mainly need to perform a few basic tasks: checking my account anytime, transferring rent to my landlord, and paying utility bills. Is the user experience of these apps very different from what I might be used to? Are there any hidden fees or pitfalls I should be aware of? If you have any experience, please share!
A friend mentioned something called Bizum, which they said allows you to transfer money to someone just using their phone number. It sounds super convenient! Is this feature integrated into the banking apps, or is it a separate app? Do all banks support it? Are there any fees for using it? This feature seems like it could solve a lot of small payment hassles, like splitting the bill with friends when we eat out.
Major Banking App Experiences
To help everyone out, I’ve put together a simple summary of what I’ve heard about the major banks and their apps based on this guide to Spanish mobile banking. Some of this information on mobile banking in Spain might be inaccurate, so please feel free to add your own experiences and corrections!
| Bank | App Features | Bizum Supported | Personal Impression |
| BBVA | Modern interface design, comprehensive features, many say it’s the best app | Yes | Friends who use BBVA highly recommend it. |
| Santander | Powerful features, but some find the interface a bit dated and takes some getting used to | Yes | I’m using it myself, and it really does have a ton of features. |
| CaixaBank | Formerly La Caixa, the app is called CaixaBankNow, also has a large user base | Yes | I’ve heard the old app wasn’t great, but it has been improved. |
| Sabadell | Solid and reliable, has all the necessary features | Yes | Fewer people I know use this one. |
It seems like mobile banking in Spain is quite widespread and convenient, it just might take some time to get used to the different user habits and tools like Bizum. I’d really appreciate any tips, especially for using the Santander app, or if there are any other banking apps you’d particularly recommend. Thanks in advance, everyone!
