Having just arrived in Spain, I’ve noticed that the bank app transfer functions here are a bit different from what I’m used to, especially a service called Bizum that all my friends are using. After looking into it, I’ve put together a simple, easy-to-understand summary to help others who might be just as confused.
Bizum vs. Standard Bank Transfers
To put it simply, Bizum is Spain’s version of an instant peer-to-peer payment service, focusing on speed and convenience. In contrast, standard bank transfers are more traditional.

Bizum's Features:
- Instant transfers: The money arrives in seconds, which is a fantastic feature! It’s a lifesaver for splitting the bill with friends or paying small merchants.
- Linked to your phone number: You don’t need the recipient’s long IBAN. As long as you have their phone number, you can send money (provided they have also activated Bizum).
- Free of charge: For the most part, Bizum transfers between personal users are free.
- Has transfer limits: There are usually single transaction and daily limits. For example, Santander has a maximum of €500 per transaction and €1,200 per day. It’s ideal for smaller payments.
Standard Bank Transfer's Features:
- Requires an IBAN: You must enter the recipient’s full IBAN and name. Any mistake can cause it to fail.
- Transaction time: Transfers within the same bank are generally fast, sometimes even instant. However, if you’re sending money to a different bank, it typically takes 1-2 business days to arrive, with delays over weekends and holidays. When using Spanish mobile banking, some banks offer a paid option for immediate interbank transfers for a small fee, a useful feature to know about Spanish mobile banking apps.
- Higher limits: Suitable for large payments like rent or tuition fees.
Experience with Major Banking Apps
I primarily use BBVA and CaixaBank, and I find both of their apps quite user-friendly. You can usually find the “Enviar Dinero” or “Bizum” option right on the home screen. Once you tap it, you can choose between a Bizum or a standard transfer. Here’s a quick comparison of the features of several common banks and their take on Spanish mobile banking:
| Bank | App User-Friendliness | Bizum Integration | Features |
| BBVA | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Excellent | Cleanest interface, clear and logical navigation. My personal favorite. |
| CaixaBank | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Very Good | Comprehensive features, but the app can be a bit laggy at times and requires a separate CaixaBank Sign app for authorizations. |
| Santander | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Very Good | The app design is standard and reliable, with all the necessary functions. |
| Sabadell | ⭐⭐⭐ | Average | Friends have complained that their app feels a bit outdated, but it gets basic transfers done without any issues. |
The rule of thumb is simple: use Bizum for small amounts and standard transfers for larger sums or payments to companies and institutions. When you’re just starting out, always double-check the IBAN before confirming, as recovering a mistaken transfer can be a hassle. I hope this post has been helpful!
