Hi everyone, I just arrived in Madrid and am still getting used to everything. I ran into a question while setting up a bank account and wanted to ask for your advice: Do they have something like the ‘mobile-only bank cards’ we used back home? I mean the kind without a physical card, where you just get a virtual card number in an app for online payments or linking to services.
I went to a BBVA branch and tried to explain it to the bank manager for a while, but he didn’t seem to get what I meant and just kept recommending their mobile app. After looking into it, I realized the logic of Spanish banking seems a bit different. What they call ‘mobile banking’ or ‘digital banking’ here is essentially about managing your bank account through an app, rather than issuing a separate product called a ‘mobile-only card’. Basically, once you get a physical debit or credit card, you can access all of its account features through the corresponding mobile app.

So, the bottom line is: Spain doesn’t have the concept of a ‘mobile-only bank card’ that’s independent of a physical card. However, almost all major bank apps are so powerful that you barely feel the need for a physical card. Through a mobile banking in Spain app, you can:
- Online Payments: You can view the full card number, expiration date, and CVV code directly in the app, which is very convenient for online shopping.
- NFC Payments: Add your physical card details to your phone’s NFC payment feature, and you can just tap your phone to pay, same as using the physical card.
- Instant Transfers: There’s a system here called Bizum, which is supported by virtually all banks. You can transfer money instantly just by knowing the recipient’s phone number. The limit is usually €500 per transaction, which is great for splitting bills with friends.
- Cardless Withdrawal: Banks like BBVA and CaixaBank allow you to generate a temporary code in the app, which you can then enter at an ATM to withdraw cash without needing your card.
To help other newcomers, I’ve put together a brief summary of my experience with a few major banks. This is just my personal opinion, so feel free to add your own thoughts on these Spanish mobile banking apps.
| Bank | App Features | Personal Experience |
| BBVA | Modern interface, comprehensive features, considered by many to be the best banking app in Spain. | Smooth navigation, clearly organized features, user-friendly for beginners. The cardless withdrawal feature is great. |
| Santander | Also feature-rich, but the interface feels a bit more traditional. | It’s standard and gets the job done, but lacks the design flair of BBVA. |
| CaixaBank | The app, CaixaBankNow, integrates imagin and is complex but powerful. | It definitely has a lot of features, but can feel a bit bloated at times and takes some getting used to. |
| N26/Revolut | These are digital-only banks with no physical branches. | Quick to open an account, excellent app experience, and good exchange rates, ideal for frequent international spending. However, some might be hesitant to use it as their primary account for Bizum. |
So even though there isn’t the ‘mobile-only bank card’ we might be used to, the digital banking services in Spain are very mature. You just need to get one physical card, download its app, and you can handle 99% of your daily needs. Hope this post helps other newcomers! No more worrying about forgetting your wallet.
