Recently, many friends have been asking about family reunification visas. As someone who has successfully processed reunification for my parents, I’d like to share my experience and important considerations from this process. The family reunification visa is an important visa category established by the Spanish government to maintain family unity.
Application Requirements and Basic Conditions
First, it’s important to clarify that not everyone can apply for a family reunification visa. The applicant must be a legal resident of Spain, hold a valid residence permit, and have resided legally and continuously in Spain for at least one year. Additionally, the applicant must demonstrate sufficient financial capacity to support the family members being reunified.
It’s worth noting that the financial capacity calculation standard is typically 150% of the IPREM. If more than one family member is to be reunified, an additional 50% financial requirement is added for each additional person.
Eligible Family Members for Reunification

According to Spanish immigration regulations, family members eligible for reunification include: spouse or domestic partner, minor children, adult children who are dependent on the applicant, and parents of the applicant or their spouse. It’s particularly important to note that if student visa applications are rejected, when applying for parental reunification, you typically need to prove they have no other children to care for them in their country of residence.
| Family Member Type | Age Requirements | Special Conditions |
| Spouse | No restrictions | Marriage certificate required |
| Children | Under 18 | Or over 18 but financially dependent |
| Parents | Over 65 | Must prove no other children for care |
Required Documents Checklist
Document preparation is the most tedious part of the entire application process. Main requirements include the application form, copy of the applicant’s residence permit, proof of financial capacity, housing certificate, and student visa renewal related documents for the family members being reunified.
All foreign documents must be authenticated and translated, which is a time-consuming process, so early preparation is recommended. Authentication can be done through Apostille or consular authentication, and specific requirements can be consulted at the local foreigners’ affairs office.
Application Process and Timeline
The entire application process involves several steps: first, make an online or in-person appointment, then submit application materials, followed by waiting for approval results. Processing time is typically 3-6 months, though it may sometimes take longer.
Once the application is approved, family members to be reunified must apply for entry visas at Spanish consulates in their country of residence. This process is relatively simpler, but still requires preparing appropriate materials and medical examinations for TIE appointment processing. After entry, they must apply for official residence permits at the local foreigners’ affairs office within one month.
Based on my experience, I recommend thoroughly understanding all requirements before applying, preparing complete documentation, and maintaining patience. While the process may be somewhat complex, seeing family members reunited in Spain makes all the effort worthwhile. I hope this information helps friends who are preparing to apply.
