Spanish Supermarket Frozen Paella Comprehensive Review
Recently, due to a busy work schedule, I often need to solve dinner quickly, so I started paying attention to frozen paella from various supermarkets. As someone who has lived in Spain for many years, paella is a daily essential, but I don’t always have time to make it from scratch. After a month of tasting, I reviewed several main products on the market and want to share my findings with everyone.
Tested Products and Basic Information
This time I selected representative products from four supermarkets: Mercadona, Carrefour, Lidl, and Alcampo. Prices range from 2.5 to 5.9 euros, with most portions between 400-500 grams. All products claim to contain shrimp, mussels, squid, and other seafood ingredients, but the actual content varies significantly.

| Brand | Price | Weight | Seafood Content | Overall Rating |
| Mercadona | 2.89 | 450 | Average | 3.5/5 |
| Carrefour | 4.20 | 500 | Good | ⅘ |
| Lidl | 2.59 | 400 | Limited | ⅗ |
| Alcampo | 5.90 | 480 | Rich | 4.5/5 |
Taste and Ingredient Analysis
Mercadona’s version is quite standard, with rice texture being appropriately firm, but the seafood ingredients are indeed insufficient, with only 4-5 shrimp and rather small mussels. However, considering the price, the value for money is still acceptable. Carrefour’s product shows more attention to ingredients, with larger squid pieces, good shrimp freshness, and noticeable saffron aroma.
Lidl’s version has the cheapest price, but you truly get what you pay for. Seafood ingredients are obviously limited, and the rice is somewhat overcooked, lacking the chewiness of traditional paella. Alcampo’s premium version truly justifies its price, with the richest variety of seafood, including clams, and taste closest to restaurant quality.
Cooking Convenience Comparison
All products support both microwave and pan heating methods. Microwave heating takes about 6-8 minutes, but I personally recommend using a pan, which allows the bottom of the rice to caramelize slightly, giving it more of that traditional paella feel. Alcampo has the most thoughtful packaging design, with a separate seasoning packet inside, allowing you to adjust the amount according to personal preference.
Originally thought all frozen products were similar, but actual testing revealed significant differences. If budget is limited, Mercadona is a good choice; if you want a better experience, Alcampo, though more expensive, is definitely worth it. For those who need to solve dinner quickly, these products all provide decent solutions that are more affordable and healthier than takeout. Whether you’re looking for tips on frozen seafood rice or guidance on paella ingredient shopping, understanding seafood selection techniques can greatly improve your dining experience.
