Having lived in Madrid for a few months recently, I’ve discovered that this city has an incredible amount of activities in October. Since I wasn’t sure where to go on weekends, I compiled some interesting recent activities along with nearby beaches around Madrid that you might find helpful.
Music and Performance Activities
This month, Matadero is hosting an indie music festival with performances over three consecutive weekends. I went last Saturday and the atmosphere was absolutely fantastic, with reasonably priced tickets around 15-20 euros. If you’re into electronic music, Sala Caracol has DJ nights every Friday with a 10 euro entrance fee, and there’s a discount if you arrive before midnight. Teatro Real is currently staging a new opera - while tickets are a bit pricey, the venue itself is worth visiting.
Markets and Food Activities
The weekend market next to Retiro Park opens every Sunday this month from 10am to 6pm. You’ll find plenty of handicrafts, second-hand books and local food. Last time I bought some handmade soaps and ceramic cups there at much cheaper prices than in stores. While Mercado de San Miguel operates regularly, they’re running special tapas tasting events in October where you can sample signature dishes from different stalls. Remember to go early, as it gets really crowded in the afternoon.
Additionally, there’s a food festival in the Malasaña district this weekend featuring all kinds of street food. I personally recommend trying the churros and bocadillo there - absolutely authentic.
Art Exhibition Recommendations
The Prado Museum currently has a special exhibition of 17th-century Spanish paintings running until mid-November. The recent contemporary art exhibition at Reina Sofía is also excellent, with tickets at 12 euros and discounts for students and seniors. I originally wanted to visit the Thyssen Museum, but it’s under maintenance this month, so I’ll go next month instead.
CaixaForum has a photography exhibition featuring works by Latin American photographers, with free admission. I found it even more impressive than some paid exhibitions - highly recommended for photography enthusiasts.
